Harmony Gold is the 5th largest gold mining company in the world with listings in SA, London and New York stock exchanges. It employs close to 40 000 people and has a market cap in excess of R11b. In 2008, the company retained us to craft its turnaround strategy. They were in debt to the tune of R4.5b, production in their 15 mines was running at 80% of target and costs were escalating. We worked with the executive and operational management teams on a back-to-basics plan to stabilize the entity and then embarked on an organic strategy to get the best out of its existing asset base.

A portfolio strategy based on detailed understanding of each asset performance and potential was formulated. On the back of this strategy, we formulated a capital reduction plan made up of rationalization of marginal assets and joint venturing on assets that were a cash drain to the business and a capital burden in the foreseeable future. Within 18 months, the company had a net debt position of zero and it declared its first dividend in 5 years in September 2009. We then launched an organic-acquisition plan to put the company on a long-term growth path in late 2009.

AMEC Engineering Consulting is a UK based internationally recognized firm with global oil and gas clients and projects. The company has grown rapidly over the last 5 years through acquisitions. Towards the end of 2009, AMEC acquired GRD Minproc Ltd, an Australian engineering consulting firm with expertise in mining resource projects located across Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

AMEC retained us to implement the post-acquisition integration process for the Africa operation of GRD Minproc. The main focus was the strategic alignment of the Africa business unit to AMEC’s global strategy for oil and gas and formulation of the Africa specific business development model. Formulating the underlying organisational structure and establishing resource requirements to support the strategy was part of the project.

Intersite Property Asset Management is a public sector organisation that manages the property assets of the Department of Transport. The organisation’s mandate is to maximize the value of department’s property assets. Management wanted to diversify their income base beyond rental takings and the government subsidy and they retained us to formulate an expansion strategy that would achieve this without hugely impacting on costs.

For 6 months we worked on a 'related industry' expansion plan, which would take the company's existing services suite to new customers and markets. We launched two new business units that included creation and management of asset registers for all government departments. We launched a property development business that would work with private sector developers to acquire and develop underutilized government land. Scorecards were developed for the corporate and each business unit. We developed executive action statements as part of the operational implementation and measurement framework. The organisation trebled its revenue and reduced its over-dependence on government funding.

South African Football Association - Strategy development: Worked with the SAFA Board and executive team in formulating the football development strategy and organisational focus needed to achieve the 2014 soccer World Cup performance objective for the national team

Pan South African Language Board - Strategy development: We worked with the executive management team in developing a business case and motivation for the National Treasury to consider a higher funding level for the body that protects and promotes langauge rights for all South Africans. Prepared the organisation’s MTEF plans according to the National Treasury guidelines

Kaya FM - We worked with the Board and the station management team in assessing bids from the various Radio Sales agencies. We carried out a detailed analysis on capabilities fit with Kaya FM to recommend a final advertising sales organisation that would partner the station to meet its long term advertsing revenue objectives

ABSA Bank - Formulated a brand activation strategy for the corporate marketing team to drive the acceleration of the bank into the youth market

Construction Education and Training Authority - We carried out a climate survey as part of the restructuring of the organisation. We developed a strategy with the executive and Board, culminating in the development of an aligned performance management system

Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority - We have worked with the EWSETA for a peiod of over four years on various assignments
  • Formulated the organisation’s turnaround strategy as part of a task team that was appointed to adminsiter the organisation and put it on a healthy platform to start delivering o n its mandate of facilitating skills development in the energy and water sector
  • Developed the organisation’s MTEF strategic plans for 3 consecutive years, each time facilitating Board and management strategy dialogues and cascading the strategy into operational plans for departments
  • Developed the organisation’s Quality Assurance strategy aligned to the overall strategic prirorities of the EWSETA
  • Developed a ‘performance dashboard’ in line with government Monitoring and Evaluation framework
Egoli Gas - Corporate Strategy development, innovation growth strategy development & innovation process design and implementation

Anoraaq Resources - We worked with the executive team in formulating plans and strategies to take Anoraaq from ‘project’ status as a joint venture with Anglo Platinum to a fully fledged mining company with responsibility for the full operation of one of Anglo Platinum’s major assets in the Limpopo platinum belt

Kutlwanong Center (NPO) - We asisted the NPO, funded by Investec Asset Management, to develop a strategy with the Board and formulate operational plans needed to drive the organisation towards its goal of achieveing a national footprint with an expanded base of corporate funders. The organisation provides additional classes in Mathematics and science for HDSA’s in marginal township and rural schools in order to improve their Matric Grades and facilitate their entry into sciences at tertiary level

Royal Bafokeng Platinum - We are providing coaching for investment managers to think strategically in running the investment portfolio of RBH and achieve the targeted shareholder returns

ARM Platinum - As part of their CSI initiatives ARM Platinum has assisted the Modikwa community to form a Community company: DEVCO, which is then the preferred supplier for Cleaning services, Catering, Building maintenance. Since it's establishment DEVCO has been operating at a loss. Flamingo Moon Consulting was commissioned to Restructure the Community company
